Welcome to the website for Carmine Galasso's research group!

I am an Associate Professor of Catastrophe Risk Engineering in the University College London (UCL)'s Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering (CEGE), UK, and a part-time Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the Scuola Universitaria Superiore (IUSS) Pavia, Italy, in the Centro di Formazione e Ricerca per la Mitigazione del Rischio Sismico (ROSE). Prior to joining UCL, I have worked as a Catastrophe Risk Modeler at Applied Insurance Research (AIR) Worldwide, San Francisco, USA; and as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Performance-based Earthquake Engineering Laboratory, at the University of California, Irvine, USA. I earned my PhD in Earthquake Risk at the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Italy, in January 2011.

Our research focuses on the development and application of probabilistic and statistical methods and tools for catastrophe risk modeling and disaster risk reduction. We investigate risks to building portfolios and infrastructure exposed to multiple natural hazards, including earthquakes, strong wind, and flooding, with special emphasis on developing countries. Our ultimate goal is to provide society with a sustainable, safe, and resilient built environment.

Our research is funded by the UK Research Councils, the European Commission, the British Council, the Chinese International Centre for Collaborative Research on Disaster Risk Reduction (ICCR-DRR), the China Scholarship Council (CSC), the (Mexican) Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT), the World Bank and its  Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), the Motorola Solution Foundation, and the Willis Research Network.

Much of our group's research falls under EPICentre, a UCL research center focused on dynamic multidisciplinary research to improve the resilience of the society, the built environment and communities to natural hazards. We also collaborate very closely with the UCL's Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR).

WHAT'S NEW

  • 8 September 2019: Several members of the research group will give presentations on their research at the XVIII Convegno Nazionale Associazione Nazionale Italiana di Ingegneria Sismica (ANIDIS) – L'Ingegneria Sismica in Italia, Ascoli Piceno, Italy, September, 15-19, 2019; and the Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics (SECED) 2019 Conference: Earthquake Risk and Engineering Towards a Resilient World, Greenwich, UK, September 9-10, 2019. Details associated with those presentations are available on the Research Outputs > Conference Proceedings/Abstracts page.

  • 6 September 2019: Congratulations to Earthquake Engineering with Disaster Management MSc students Alexandros Tsantoulis and Matthias Fuentes for having received the 2019 EPICentre Best Poster Award (1st and 2nd place respectively) for their final MSc Research Projects. Alexandros worked on ‘A Framework for Seismic Resilience Assessment of RC Building Portfolios’, supervised by Dr Carmine Galasso and Dr Fabio Freddi; Matthias worked on ‘Impact of Directivity-Induced Pulse-Like Ground Motions on Building-portfolio Seismic Loss’, supervised by Dr Carmine Galasso and Dr Roberto Gentile. Students were evaluated on different criteria (visual appeal, contents, presentation and Q&A) by a panel composed by Dr Alexandra Tsioulou (Willis Tower Watson, UK), Mr Paolo Perugini (ARUP, UK), and Dr Karim Tarbali (Politecnico di Milano, Italy).

  • 6 September 2019: Congratulations to David Wilkie for passing his final PhD viva today with very minor corrections. David's PhD dissertation is titled ‘Advancing probabilistic risk assessment of offshore wind turbines on monopiles’. The examiners were Dr Susana Lopez-Querol, UCL, and Dr Raffaele De Risi, University of Bristol. David will now stay in our team as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow through a very prestigious EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship.

  • 1 September 2019: The website for Carmine Galasso's research group is now live. Welcome!
