Welcome to the website for Carmine Galasso's research group!
I am an Associate Professor of Catastrophe Risk Engineering in the University College London (UCL)'s Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering (CEGE), UK, and a part-time Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the Scuola Universitaria Superiore (IUSS) Pavia, Italy, in the Centro di Formazione e Ricerca per la Mitigazione del Rischio Sismico (ROSE). Prior to joining UCL, I have worked as a Catastrophe Risk Modeler at Applied Insurance Research (AIR) Worldwide, San Francisco, USA; and as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Performance-based Earthquake Engineering Laboratory, at the University of California, Irvine, USA. I earned my PhD in Earthquake Risk at the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Italy, in January 2011.
Our research focuses on the development and application of probabilistic and statistical methods and tools for catastrophe risk modeling and disaster risk reduction. We investigate risks to building portfolios and infrastructure exposed to multiple natural hazards, including earthquakes, strong wind, and flooding, with special emphasis on developing countries. Our ultimate goal is to provide society with a sustainable, safe, and resilient built environment.
Our research is funded by the UK Research Councils, the European Commission, the British Council, the Chinese International Centre for Collaborative Research on Disaster Risk Reduction (ICCR-DRR), the China Scholarship Council (CSC), the (Mexican) Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT), the World Bank and its Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), the Motorola Solution Foundation, and the Willis Research Network.
Much of our group's research falls under EPICentre, a UCL research center focused on dynamic multidisciplinary research to improve the resilience of the society, the built environment and communities to natural hazards. We also collaborate very closely with the UCL's Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR).
20 February 2020: Carmine Galasso has joined the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction as an Editor.
17 January 2020: Biao Song and Carmine Galasso are collaborating with Prof Amit Kanvinde and his research group at University of California, Davis, to investigate improved design strategies and structural reliability of exposed column base plate connections subjected to flexure and axial compression. This is part of a much wider project investigating exposed column base plate connections in steel moment-resisting frames involving various US partners and UCL. Some preliminary results of our study have been presented at the recent 2020 Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) Annual Meeting, in Berkeley, CA. You can find here our presentation.
30 November 2019: Congratulations to David Wilkie for being selected as one of the 10 finalists of the 2019 Allianz Climate Risk Research Award. A summary of David's PhD work, investigating offshore wind farm risk/resilience, has been included in the 2019 Allianz Research Award Compendium. Well done David!
20 September 2019: Several members of the research group have given presentations on their research at the XVIII Convegno Nazionale Associazione Nazionale Italiana di Ingegneria Sismica (ANIDIS) – L'Ingegneria Sismica in Italia, Ascoli Piceno, Italy, September, 15-19, 2019; and the Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics (SECED) 2019 Conference: Earthquake Risk and Engineering Towards a Resilient World, Greenwich, UK, September 9-10, 2019. Details associated with those presentations are available on the Research Outputs > Conference Proceedings/Abstracts page.
